Born and raised in Frederick, Zach was one of Governor Thomas Johnson High School’s greatest all-around athletes. He was a three-year starter in varsity football, and a four-year starter in varsity basketball. He was a state champion track runner and during his senior year broke the then state 3A record in the 100-yard dash. Captain of both the basketball and football teams, he played on the Patriots’ 1975 state championship basketball squad. As a receiver and defensive back, he garnered All-League and All-State honors and was awarded a full football scholarship to Syracuse University. He started for the Orange as a defensive back in his sophomore year. After serving in the Army, Zach returned to Frederick County and was the head track coach at Catoctin High School and the Silver Oak Academy.
